Climate Change conversations

We will be beginning a conversation about climate change and how to respond with a reading of Naomi Klein’s book, This Changes Everything. This book offers an explanation of why, despite the magnitude of the crisis, so little has been done to seriously tackle climate change. Naomi Klein suggests that climate change is wrapped in the same knot that blocks serious action on many of the social and political challenges we face. She puts forward the idea that strengthening local democracy and self-determination has the potential to elevate the well being of individuals as well as to enable communities to reestablish local control of their environment and natural resources. The book is full of sobering facts and raises many discussion- and debate-worthy questions, (the book is provocative and if you disagree, bring your disagreement to the conversation!) but it is ultimately inspiring and points toward many dimensions of effective response. We hope to use the book as a point of departure for discussion and action. Please grab a copy and start reading, then join us for conversations after Kiddush lunch. The book has three parts, so we’ll discuss them at three meetings:

  •  May 9  – Part One: Bad Timing
  • May 30 – Part Two: Magical Thinking
  • June 20 – Part Three: Starting Anyway
